The Vietnamese community in Qatar on Friday marked the Lunar New Year 2020 at the Vietnamese embassy in Doha.
Members of the community came together in a festive mood to wish each other a happy new year.
Vietnamese ambassador Nguyen Dinh Thao wished the community members, their families and friends a good new year in Qatar, their second home.
He also asked them to be good representatives of Vietnam in Qatar through abiding by the local laws and regulations and exert more efforts to contribute to the country’s progress and the further growth of good relations between the two friendly countries.
Addressing those present at the celebration, he said: “In 2019, political relations between Vietnam and Qatar received remarkable attention from the leaders of the two countries. In April, Chair of the Vietnamese National Assembly (NA) Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan attended the 140th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU-140) and related meetings in Doha and held meetings with many Qatari leaders. In August, Truong Thi Mai, Politburo Member, Party Central Committee (PCC) secretary and head of the PCC Commission for Mass Mobilisation, paid an official visit to Qatar. In December, Vietnam’s Minister for Public Security General To Lam heading a high-ranking delegation of the Ministry of Public Security visited Qatar.”
The ambassador noted that “such high-ranking visits to Qatar have remarkably contributed to strengthening relations between the two countries.
There are direct flights connecting Doha to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang in Vietnam, providing opportunities for the two countries to boost their relations in all fields”.
Last year, the Vietnamese community liaison board in Qatar closely co-operated with the embassy to organise community events, making a great contribution to the success of the high-ranking visits by Vietnamese officials to Qatar.
On December 27, the liaison board elected a new leadership team led by Nguyen Thanh Tung and two deputy heads, Le Anh Cuong and Nguyen Tien Hiep.
Reviewing the main achievements of the Vietnamese economy over the last year, Nguyen Dinh Thao stressed: “Vietnam continues to be highly appreciated by international economic organisations and remains a destination to attract many foreign investors. Besides, independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity are maintained, defence and security are enhanced, and political security, social order and safety are ensured.
“The role and position of Vietnam in the region and the international arena is increasingly strengthened. On January 2, 2020, Vietnam began activities in its capacity as president of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), marking the start of the country’s UNSC non-permanent membership for a two-year term.”
He hoped that growth would continue steadily in the new year to improve the lives of people there and give them better living standards.
He also wished the community continued success and propensity in Qatar — a peaceful, safe, secure and highly stable country that embraces diversity.
