French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Tel Aviv Tuesday morning to meet with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former defence minister Benny Gantz and main opposition leader Yair Lapid.

Macron met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank city of Ramallah later Tuesday. He said that the Hamas attack had been traumatic for Israel but that it also was a disaster for the Palestinian people. “Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people,” he added.

One of two elderly Israeli hostages released from Hamas captivity told reporters she was beaten as she was taken to Gaza on October 7, but was then treated well and given medical attention during her two-week captivity.

Hamas has so far released four hostages. Israel has not freed Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the hostage releases, which was an initial Hamas pre-condition.

Overnight Israeli air strikes across Gaza killed 140 people, according to the Hamas-run government’s media office.

The death toll in Gaza rose to 5,791, including 2,360 children, the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry said Tuesday. The Israeli military put the number of people taken hostage by Hamas on October 7 at 222. The official number of people killed in the Hamas attack has not been revised since Saturday; it remains at 1,400.
