Ogunode, Ashraf lead the way for Qatar in Beijing

Qatar’s athletes made a rousing start to their 15th IAAF World Athletics Championships campaign with sprinter Femi Ogunode storming into the semi-finals of the 100 metres race and two-time world junior champion Ashraf Amgad Elseify, who is still 20-years-old, making it to the final of hammer throw at the National Stadium in Beijing, China on Saturday.

Musaeb Abdulrahman Balla was the third Qatari athlete to excel on the opening day of the worlds, qualifying for the semi-finals of the 800 metres event.

Those missing out on making the qualification grade were Jamal Hairane, who finished sixth in Heat 2 of the 800 metres event with a time of 1:48.96secs and Hashim Salah Mohamed, who finished 12th in the heats (9:17.35) of 3000 steeplechase.

Leading the charge, however, was Nigeria-born Ogunode who went sub-10, clocking 9.99secs in Heat 3 of 100 metres.
