The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has completed more than 62% of the development works of the Khamees Al Obaidly Interchange on the E Ring Road, local Arabic daily Arrayah recently reported.
Once the project is completed, the interchange will ensure a smooth traffic flow on all sides of the road. “With three to four tracks, the interchange can accommodate around 20,000 vehicles per hour in both directions,” Ashghal project manager Hassan al-Ghanim said.
The project completion is expected in the second quarter of 2020 while some parts of the project will be opened in the first quarter itself.
The interchange has a distinctive design with a pentagonal shape and will link E Ring Road, Doha Expressway, Sabah Al Ahmad Corridor, Industrial Area Road and Rawdat Al Khail Street. Besides, the residential areas of Nuaija, Al Thumama, Abu Hamour, Al Mamoura and Mesaimeer will be connected while easy access to Al Wakrah and Al Wukair will be ensured.
The interchange, according to al-Ghanim, is located in a residential area that has many vital facilities like Al Thumama Stadium, one of the FIFA 2022 World Cup stadiums, schools, health centres and shopping malls. Three pedestrian bridges have been set up with the interchange in order to provide easy access to Al Thumama stadium on foot. These are in addition to the exclusive bicycle paths that will increase road safety.
