Ceasefire talks ‘advancing slowly’: Report
Earlier, we reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had approved the return of Israeli negotiators to Doha to continue talks on a Gaza ceasefire.
The Jerusalem Post, citing an unnamed Israeli official, now reports that those talks are progressing but “are advancing slowly”.
The official is also reported to have said that Hamas has not yet handed over the list of Israeli captives who would be released in a potential deal. Hamas has claimed that it cannot reach all of the captives and will need several days after the ceasefire has already begun to provide the list, the newspaper said.
The official said that it was “a false claim”, and that Hamas could provide the list if they wanted to.

‘A new tragic morning’: Israeli attacks kill 77 across Gaza

Reporting from Deir el-Balah, central Gaza Strip
Families of victims who were killed in overnight attacks are outside Al-Aqsa Hospital morgue and waiting for the burial of their loved ones.
Israeli fighter jets have destroyed three residential homes in the central areas, killing more than 25 Palestinians in these simultaneous attacks.
We are still getting reports coming from northern Gaza suggesting that Israeli forces are still pressing on with military operations.
In particular, in the vicinity of the Indonesian Hospital, [Israeli forces] are burning to the ground and destroying all key infrastructure in the north of the Strip as part of the ongoing military operation that has been taking place for more than two months.
The initial confirmation we are still getting is that 77 Palestinians have been killed since yesterday morning.
Currently, drones are still hovering overhead across the skies of the central areas.
We have heard, during the early hours of this morning, sporadic shelling coming from the eastern areas of Deir el-Balah and its suburbs.

Houthi official says missile targeting Israel another failure for US-made THAAD
The latest missile launch from Yemen overnight against Israel highlights yet more failure by the US military’s advanced Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system (THAAD), a Houthi official said.
“Every new day that passes in the life of this aggression on Gaza means more development of Yemeni weapons and another failure for the Zionists and Americans,” Nasruddin Amer, a senior member of the Houthi media authority, said in a post on X.
Israel must realise that no system can reliably protect it from missiles travelling at hypersonic speeds, and must therefore stop the war on Gaza, Amer said.
The Israeli military, which reportedly deployed the THAAD for the first time last week to shoot down a Yemeni missile after a failed interception by Israel’s own defence systems, has not confirmed whether the US-made system was used last night.
The military did say that an initial interception attempt failed last night, allowing the Houthi missile to enter Israeli airspace where it was partially intercepted. The interception is being investigated, the military said.

Babies in Gaza at risk ‘before their lives have started’: MSF
Doctors Without Borders, known by its French initials MSF, has warned that a paediatric department in Nasser Hospital in Gaza’s Khan Younis has been operating beyond its capacity and the neonatal intensive care unit is treating children with respiratory infections, dehydration and premature newborns with life-threatening complications.
MSF emergency coordinator Pascale Coissard said the onset of winter in Gaza, disintegrating tents and no other shelter for people displaced by Israel’s war on the territory has created “exceptional” conditions that threaten the lives of babies before they are even born.
“Even before their lives have started outside the womb, babies are at risk of disease and death,” Coissard says.
“Once born, babies face immediate and extreme challenges: displaced in the cold of winter, without adequate access to warmth, shelter, or healthcare, as Israel continues to bomb Gaza and restrict essential supplies from entering the Strip,” she said.
MSF called on the Israeli government to ensure “rapid, unimpeded and safe entry of humanitarian aid at the level sufficient to address people’s needs, including water and medical supplies”.

Israeli air strike kills five children in Gaza ‘safe zone’: UNICEF
An Israeli air strike on a tent for displaced Palestinians within a so-called “humanitarian zone” killed five children and injured others, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
The attack took place in al-Mawasi, a coastal area near the southern town of Khan Younis, killing three boys and two girls. All were aged between seven and 13 years old, UNICEF said.
“Children have nowhere to be protected from bombs, cold, disease and hunger,” the UN agency said.
“This must stop, now.”

Israeli air strikes kill more Palestinians in the occupied West Bank: UN
Most of the 11 Palestinian people killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank in the last week of December were killed in air strikes, demonstrating Israel’s excessive use of force in the occupied territory, the United Nations said.
In its latest situation update, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that two women and two children were among the 11 people killed by Israeli forces between December 24 and 30. Almost 50 others were injured, including 19 children and four women, OCHA said.
Eight of the 11 who were killed died in strikes by Israeli aircraft, OCHA said, adding that basic services, such as education, water and healthcare in the Jenin refugee camp have been severely disrupted for almost a month due to an ongoing operation by Palestinian Authority (PA) forces.
In the Tulkarem and Nur Shams refugee camps, a two-day military operation by Israel damaged more than 1,000 housing units and left 21 Palestinian households, comprising 94 people, displaced, OCHA said.
Last year saw the highest number of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank displaced in the nearly two decades since OCHA began to keep records of such incidents, with some 4,250 Palestinians losing their homes and 1,760 structured destroyed.
There were also 1,400 “incidents” involving Israeli settlers across the West Bank and occupied East Jerusalem in 2024, OCHA said.

Dan Perry, former chairman of the Foreign Press Association of Israel, acknowledged there has been obstruction of aid during the harsh winter months, leading to severe humanitarian issues across the Gaza Strip.
But he highlighted Israel’s argument that Hamas hijacks aid, complicating relief efforts. Despite accusations from aid organisations and the UN, Perry also contended there is no widespread starvation occurring in Gaza.

Israeli military says air defences intercepted missile launched from Yemen
The Israeli military has shot down a missile fired from Yemen as it entered Israeli airspace.
According to the Israeli military, missile interceptors were fired with the resulting explosion sending shrapnel from the destroyed missile falling over the Modi’in area in central Israel.
Air attack sirens sounded across central and southern Israel as the missile approached with the Israeli ambulance service, Magen David Adom, reporting 12 people requiring treatment for injuries sustained in the rush to bomb shelters and nine suffering anxiety attacks.
The emergency service said there were no immediate reports of injuries from the strike or falling shrapnel.

UN expert calls on medical professionals worldwide to suspend ties to Israel
The UN’s special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory, Francesca Albanese, has called on “medical professionals worldwide” to suspend ties with Israel in an act of solidarity with the more than “1,000 colleagues of yours” killed in Gaza over the past 14 months.
Countless more Palestinian medical workers “were arrested, tortured, disappeared”, Albanese said in a post on social media.
“Out of dismay [and] solidarity you should revolt, and urge suspension of ties with Israel until it stops the genocide [and] accounts for it. What are you waiting for,” she said.
Earlier on Friday, Albanese and the UN’s special rapporteur on the right to physical and mental health, Dr Tlaleng Mofokeng, issued a joint statement denouncing the “blatant disregard” for the right to health in the Gaza Strip following Israel’s attack on the Kamal Adwan Hospital and the detention of its director, Dr Hussam Abu Safia.
“For well over a year into the genocide, Israel’s blatant assault on the right to health in Gaza and the rest of the occupied Palestinian territory is plumbing new depths of impunity,” the UN experts said.

Israeli military confirms Gaza hospital director in detention: Report
The Israeli military has confirmed it is holding Kamal Adwan Hospital director Dr Hussam Abu Safia in custody, ABC News reports, citing a statement provided to the Australian network.
The Israeli military said in the statement that Abu Safia was “apprehended for suspected involvement in terrorist activities and for holding a rank in the Hamas terror organisation”.
Israeli authorities have provided no evidence of Abu Safia’s connection to Hamas.
The doctor is “currently being investigated by Israeli security forces”, the military added.
Israeli forces detained Abu Safia during an assault on the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza on December 27.
Israel’s military denied they were holding him in custody, Physicians for Human Rights-Israel said on Thursday, despite video evidence of his arrest near the hospital which Israeli forces destroyed.

Israeli military arrests settlers attempting to enter Gaza
Israeli military radio has reported that a number of settlers have been arrested for attempting to break into Gaza in order to begin establishing settlements in the Palestinian territory.
Army Radio said the arrests took place following an event to promote Israel’s settlement of the war-torn Gaza Strip.
Israeli politicians and far-right settler organisations have held events in recent months to push for the establishment of settlements in post-war Gaza.
Prominent settler activist Daniella Weiss reportedly attempted to enter Gaza in November with the help of Israeli soldiers to survey areas for potential settlement.
Israeli political leaders held a similar event in October, entitled “Preparing to Resettle Gaza”, in which 10 of 32 members of Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu’s Likud party attended.
