At least 10 migrant workers will be evacuated to Tunisia this week ahead of repatriation
The Philippine government is working on repatriating more of its citizens from Libya due to the escalating violence in the country.
Elmer Cato, Chargé d’Affaires of the Philippine Embassy in Libya, said in a tweet that at least 10 more Filipinos will be evacuated to Tunisia for repatriation. Cato said the Embassy continues to receive requests for repatriation more than six weeks after the latest conflict erupted, Philippine Daily Inquirer reported. In a recent Facebook post, Cato said that the government’s call did not go unheeded and that lately more citizens have been requesting assistance with repatriation.
Earlier this month, the Department of Foreign Affairs raised the crisis alert level in Libya, which now calls for the evacuation of all Filipinos. The DFA said there were increased threats to the safety and security of Filipinos who are still there.
The DFA urged all Philippines citizens to leave the country after a few cases of Filipinos being injured in attacks. One man was injured when a mortar round exploded near Tripoli International Airport, leaving him with a wound to the foot. Another was wounded in the forehead during a rocket attack.
According to the Department of Labor and Employment, there are 2,600 undocumented Filipino migrant workers in Libya, most of them health workers.
