Footballing legend Pele has given his vote of confidence to Qatar hosting a “wonderful” World Cup tournament in 2022. Pelé, whose full name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento, told beIN Sports that he was particularly impressed with Qatar’s plans to make the stadiums air conditioned to deal with soaring temperatures.
The Brazilian superstar, who first came to Qatar in 1973 for a friendly match with his Santos side, said: “I know Qatar well, I’ve visited it several times before. We have the 2018 World Cup in Russia first, so there’s a lot of time to talk about 2022. The thing that caught my attention is that the stadiums are going to be air-conditioned.” He added: “Qatar is capable of hosting a wonderful World Cup. It has the right to host the World Cup and it will definitely succeed in this.”
Earlier this year, Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) secretary general Hassan Al Thawadi said Qatar’s 2022 World Cup stadium construction costs will amount to between $8 billion to $10 billion. Up to $200 billion is being spent on wider infrastructure required to host the World Cup, he said in quotes published by the Associated Press.
